100 YEARS OLD AND STILL GOING STRONG!

Up and down the Country over the May Bank Holiday weekend around 400,000 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Leaders and supporters camped in various locations in the UK to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the largest Youth Movement in the World; The Scout Association.

In 1907, following a successful army career, Lord Baden-Powell (BP) took 20 boys from different backgrounds on an experimental camp to Brownsea Island, Poole. Who would have guessed that a century later Scouting is still going AND growing not only in the UK but across the World. The Association now has a total membership in this Country of 446,352 * and 28 million** throughout the world in over 200 countries.

Crawley Mayor; Councillor Sally Blake, Laura Moffatt MP and other invited guests joined together with over 450 young members and leaders of the Crawley District to celebrate the Anniversary at local level. A camp was arranged at Stanfords, Pease Pottage and everyone enjoyed a full programme of mayhem and plenty of fun including an Edwardian Fair, camp fire, and a Crystal Maze competition.

Tony Finch, District Commissioner, said “It has been a lot of work but really worthwhile as so many young people have had a great time“
